The Solomons Plein Air Festival is proud to donate a portion of its proceeds to charity every year. Each charity and organization listed below is greatly in need of funding to reach its yearly goals. In 2017 we were happy to donate a large percentage of our proceeds to the charities listed below.

The Dennis Lake Smith Memorial Art Scholarship is awarded to students in need who are pursuing the arts at the College of Southern Maryland. Dennis Lake Smith was a resident of Solomons, Maryland and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force who received the following decorations: small arms expert marksmanship ribbon, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. He was also a past member of the Boy Scouts of America, having earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Although he was offered a scholarship to the Julliard School of Music, Dennis instead chose to study art at the Maryland Institute of Art and was the artist who, in his shop, designed the first Cavalier billboard welcoming visitors to Calvert County. He was a saxophone and harmonica player extraordinaire, who played with the very popular Southern Maryland band “Round Midnite”. Dennis also had a passion for traveling. Two of his favorite destinations were Florida and New Orleans, where he loved to attend the Jazz and Heritage Festivals with his friends from Solomons.

The July 4th Fireworks are an amazing spectacle in Southern Maryland, shot from the Patuxent River and hosted by the Solomons Business Association. This year the SBA will once again be hosting a Wounded Warriors group for our annual 4th of July Celebration! Get involved by welcoming these veterans with gift certificates, prime viewing locations, gift bag items, or any other idea you have for helping them make the most of their time here in Solomons!

Heart F.E.L.T.(Feeding Empty Little Tummies) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide nutritious meals to students and their siblings on weekends, holidays and extended school break periods. We believe that every child deserves the advantage good nutrition provides to physical, emotional and intellectual development.

Safe Harbor is a shelter for abused women and children which provides a safe and secure shelter in which they can re-build their lives in a violence-free environment.

Safe Harbor provides intervention, prevention and education to promote non-violent family interaction. It offers resources and case management for women and children suffering from domestic abuse issues. Safe Harbor also raises awareness of physical, emotional and sexual abuse in relationships to eliminate the cycle of violence.

Safe Harbor operates  with the support of the Calvert County Commissioners, the Calvert County Health Department, Safe Harbor, Inc. (a non-profit organization), and private donations from the community, which is why our involvement is so important.

PAWS is a 501(c)(3) charity that was founded in 1996 for the purpose of humane education, pet rescue, and adoption of healthy, social pets to suitable families. We have fulfilled our goals by rescue of dogs and cats that were strays, owner given up and from shelters. We vet these pets completely, including testing, altering, shots, and micro-chipping. Through showings at PetSmart, Petco, and Petfinder.com, we find them forever homes. We bring educational programs to schools and communities, stressing the importance of spay and neuter. All of our work is done using foster homes and volunteers.

Sophia’s Oasis For Equines, Inc. (SOFE), is a 501(c)3 Non-Profit, equine welfare organization located in the State of Maryland.  We are dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and placement of equines in need; assisting equines in situations of neglect, abuse or the threat of slaughter.  We are also dedicated to assisting other equine rescue organizations located in the tri-state area, New Jersey and Delaware to save equines from the slaughter pipeline.  Additionally, we desire to help the BLM mustangs whenever possible.  We are dedicated to educating the public regarding the standards of care required to maintain an equine as a riding partner and/or companion animal in a humane manner.”
