The Dennis Lake Smith Memorial Art Scholarship is awarded to students in need who are pursuing the arts at the College of Southern Maryland. Dennis Lake Smith was a resident of Solomons, Maryland and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force who received the following decorations: small arms expert marksmanship ribbon, Air Force Good Conduct Medal, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. He was also a past member of the Boy Scouts of America, having earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Although he was offered a scholarship to the Julliard School of Music, Dennis instead chose to study art at the Maryland Institute of Art and was the artist who, in his shop, designed the first Cavalier billboard welcoming visitors to Calvert County. He was a saxophone and harmonica player extraordinaire, who played with the very popular Southern Maryland band “Round Midnite”. Dennis also had a passion for traveling. Two of his favorite destinations were Florida and New Orleans, where he loved to attend the Jazz and Heritage Festivals with his friends from Solomons.
The July 4th Fireworks are an amazing spectacle in Southern Maryland, shot from the Patuxent River and hosted by the Solomons Business Association. This year the SBA will once again be hosting a Wounded Warriors group for our annual 4th of July Celebration! Get involved by welcoming these veterans with gift certificates, prime viewing locations, gift bag items, or any other idea you have for helping them make the most of their time here in Solomons!
